Modern life can be complicated. Work is often hectic, commuting is enough to make anyone want to run for the hills, and juggling social situations can sometimes make us question whether having friends at all is really such a good idea.
That is why it’s so vitally important that your home is your haven. Keeping things simple at home will allow you to relax once you lock the world out and settle down in your own beautiful bubble. But how do you reach such idyllic states of simplicity, such as a home full of scandinavian furniture like all of those in the catalogues!? By following our tips, of course!
1) Stay on top of the chores
I know what you are thinking, ‘Wait a minute; this is supposed to be about being relaxed at home. Why on earth are you mentioning chores?’ Well, my friend, because they are important to our sense of wellbeing, that’s why.
Nothing adds stress or dampens a mood quite like returning home from a nightmarish day to find a load of dirty clothes strewn across the floor and a pile of washing up in the sink.
Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. All you need to do is keep on top of things. Doing stuff as you go is actually far easier, less time-consuming, and generally better for you, so why are you putting it off?
2) Get rid of the unnecessary
Does your coffee table have 3 remote controls on it? Is your sideboard smothered in stuff? Well, now is the time to streamline and get rid of everything that you really don’t need.
To live the simple life at home, decluttering is essential. By removing the unnecessary items from your life you are giving yourself fewer options, which makes your life easier and less complicated…you know, simpler!
3) If it’s not supposed to be on show, put it away
Another element of decluttering is to give everything its own home. Putting stuff away can have a dramatic effect on how we feel about our homes, and increase the aesthetic appeal too.
It never ceases to amaze us how many people have a beautiful coffee table covered with so much stuff that they cannot appreciate the piece itself. Contemporary furniture needs to be appreciated, so clear away the clutter and enjoy what lies beneath.
4) Forget multi-tasking
Multi-tasking is something that should be left at work. If you are doing something at home, make sure it is the one thing that you should be doing and forget everything else until that one thing is done.
It’s easy to be halfway through cleaning your home to be distracted by something else, but resist the temptation wherever possible. Make a mental note of the things that find along the way and return to them once the task at hand is complete.
Otherwise you’ll reach the end of the day and have that dreadful thought that you haven’t stopped all day and yet you feel as though you’ve achieved nothing.
